Emotion and function are no contradiction
The room programme of the new crematorium
As the base area for a new type of crematorium we planned a space of approximately 3.000 square meters – enough to give a modern burial with all its requirements the appropriate room.
To help with the assessment of the capacity: a crematorium of this size covers the current demand for cremation of a small town with a total catchment area of approximately 1.5 million people.
For the design of the room programme appropriate external areas with canopied walkways, quiet zones for reflexion und encounters, green areas and water features were taken into consideration. Inside the building we created rooms for meditation, meeting, farewell, condolence and adequate ceremonies. The overall objective was the creation of a peaceful environment, which would enable everybody to experience an elementary occasion in a dignified atmosphere.
A clear separation of the mourners, the technology and the administration seemed no less important for the design. Under no circumstances should these different groups cross each other's paths – as unfortunately happens far too often. This would have contradicted any claim of dignity and respect.
