The technical centre of the crematorium
The cremation system as a design object
In our planning we did not want to focus only on the architecture and interior design, on harmonious room aesthetics and route layout; we also wanted to consider the technical plant, which is the centre of every cremation system. The huge aggregates, which can sometimes be as big as a house, always seemed to the observer like a large modern heating system (the formal similarities are due to the technical nature) and not like elements of a sacred ceremony.
An industrial designer from the ARTelier Reiss team therefore concentrated largely on the system design for this project in order to develop a completely new language of shapes for this part too – parallel to the architecture.
We aimed at a design that, just like the architecture, would be able to reflect emotions and would not seem like foreign technical objects to people at difficult times.
An individual suitable design concept for the cremation system was therefore developed for every architectural approach.
